Why Isn’t Invisalign Right For Everyone?

Looking in the mirror, what does one see? Alternatively, you might choose to notice your beautiful eyes or your new flattering hairstyle. It’s easy to ignore your teeth or focus on your misaligned teeth if your smile isn’t perfect.

When teeth needed to be straightened, metal braces were the only option. Even though braces are still commonly used, now you have another option to help you achieve your best smile. Invisalign is one of them.

Invisalign: What is it?

A growing number of teens and adults prefer Invisalign clear aligners over traditional braces. Orthodontic treatment is chosen for various reasons, including correcting gaps between teeth, repairing worn-out teeth, and correcting other dental issues. The transparency of aligners makes them a desirable option. Furthermore, patients wear Invisalign aligners while brushing, flossing, and eating without removing them. Invisalign may appear to be something anyone can use, but certain patients may not be candidates for this orthodontic treatment. So how can you find if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign? Let’s look closer to find out.

How to find if you are fit for the Invisalign or not?

There is no question why Invisalign is becoming so popular – it is the most comfortable, convenient, and easy way to fix orthodontic problems.

Invisalign, however, is not suitable for everyone due to a variety of reasons. The only sure way of learning whether you are a candidate for Invisalign is through consulting with a provider; however, several other factors can give you an idea.

  • Smokers: It may not be suitable for patients who smoke but cannot or do not want to stop during treatment. Discoloration of aligners can be caused by smoking, making them look unsightly and stained.
  • It needs a big commitment: The process may not be appropriate for those who cannot wear the aligners for a minimum of 20 hours per day. As an Invisalign patient, you have much more control over your orthodontic treatment; however, you must carefully follow your orthodontist’s instructions. You might end up needing costly mid-course corrections if you don’t wear your aligners enough.
  • Young Children: Young children are not suitable candidates for Invisalign treatment because they cannot follow the necessary steps in caring for their aligners.
  • Elder People: In addition, older clients with reduced manual dexterity might not be good candidates for aligners. If the aligners are not removed, and the teeth beneath are not cleaned, decay and further complications may occur.

Limitations of Invisalign

Invisalign has limited effectiveness. The orthodontist has less control over your teeth movements with Invisalign than with traditional braces. It is ineffective in correcting issues such as:

  • Severely rotated teeth:  Invisalign technology can only reposition teeth by a maximum of 20 degrees. Invisalign is not effective if the teeth are tilted more than 45 degrees, either forwards or backward.
  • Huge Gaps: Invisalign is an excellent way to hide gap-tooth smiles, as long as the gap is no greater than six millimeters. Invisalign cannot realign teeth reliably if the gap is too large.
  • Severe Overbites: Invisalign can treat retrognathism malocclusions mildly, but severe cases require other treatment methods. Overbite can be a result of skeletal problems and may require surgery.

What we do is give straight smiles to patients of which they can be proud. Set up a consultation call with our dental professionals to discuss Invisalign treatment.
